48th Annual Appalachian Studies Conference | Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville, Tennessee | March 20 - 22, 2025.
Friday March 21, 2025 8:00am - 9:15am CDT
HENDERSON HALL 307A
Convener and Presenter: Casey Peavler, University of Pikeville.
The purpose of our workshop is to discuss the diverse needs of the students, particularly student-athletes in higher education. Our research is based on the academic statistics of the university’s undergraduate population that utilizes the resources of the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) at the University of Pikeville. We asked the following questions: Who is utilizing the CAE? What times of the day/semester are they seeking services? Are they required to attend by an instructor, coach, or attending voluntarily? What are the main areas of interest for assistance? What do they know about the CAE before arriving? What are their desired outcomes or fears about seeking assistance? How do the faculty and staff view the services offered by the CAE? How are the faculty and staff collaborating with the student and professional CAE staff to better serve their needs and the needs of the students based on content specifics? The fostering of a supportive and collaborative academic service is imperative to the success of the student population. Our workshop will foster an environment to discuss the needs of student populations in Appalachia and higher education, how to create an environment that meets the needs of native and non-native Appalachians, and how we are using innovative approaches to conduct research and offer support at a small, private institution in Eastern Kentucky. Casey will focus on the analytical data provided by multiple semesters of tracking. Lori will use her background in pedagogical theory to express the unique needs of the students, university, and region.
